Vice President, Hokkaido University
Professor, Department of Rheumatology, Endocrinology and Nephrology, Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan

I have the honour of chairing the 3rd International Symposium of the Japanese Society of Clinical Immunology.

Science on Immunology in Japan has always been at the top of the world. The Japanese Society of Clinical Immunology is a cross-disciplinary society with the main theme of the application of basic immunology to clinical practice, and therefore many medical specialities such as basic immunology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, neurology, obstetrics, dermatology, allegology, ophthalmology, etc., have developed together under the keyword "human immunology" or "immune disease". The scientists with those different medical specialities have developed current clinical immunology through an exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Since 2022, the Japanese Society of Clinical Immunology has held the International Symposium separately from the Annual Scientific Meeting, and this third symposium will be held in Hakodate. The aim of the International Symposium is to share the knowledge of the current advance of clinical immunology with worldwide experts, and to disseminate our advance to the world, leading to the further development of science in clinical immunology.

Hakodate is not only one of the world's leading tourist destinations, with Mount Hakodate, giving one of the world's top three night views, but also has a history dating back to 1859, when the port was opened as Japan's first foreign trade port along with Nagasaki and Yokohama following the Treaty of Amity between Japan and the USA. Accordingly, Hakodate is a symbol of Japan's exchange with the rest of the world. I do hope that you will visit Hakodate as a place for discussing clinical immunology beyond national borders.

We look forward to welcoming you in Hakodate.
